you can be sure of a lot of resentment by the republicans who couldn't defeat him prior to WWII which is why they passed the 2 term amendment. this was out of spite.

FDR was a popular president for his time.

besides congressman, senators & president should be on the same footing term wise other wise the president would be deemed a lame duck in his final term where congressman & senators face no such drag. (assuming a 2 term 8 year presidency vs. 4 term 12 year congressman/senator) you can see why this is not balanced.

the Constitution is about balance of power. you give one side more power than it should, it will create problems. that balance has been broken for some time.
FDR was elected to four terms, but he died well short of "serving four terms". He only served three, plus one month and eight days, and it was Truman who dropped the a-bomb on the Japanese. As a Louisianan, you well know the rumors that surround Huey P. Long's death being orchestrated by FDR, and FDR also used the power of his office to destroy California's Upton Sinclair to keep him from being a contender. FDR expanded the Federal bureaucracy to such a degree that the U.S. is still suffering under the burden of taxation to support what he created. Twelve years is too long.

Everyone shut the fuck up! Is this going to degenerate into another (yes, another) how many years or terms did FDR serve? Stop that shit now! FDR was elected to four terms. He served three complete terms and a small part of a fourth. There! Now it's done. Try to stay on topic from here on out.

I could go with that if its two 6 year terms. It'll sync perfectly with the proposed four 3 year terms for congressman/senators.

never heard of that FDR rumor, but I did know of one where FDR was looking to start an investigation against Huey Long.

since both are elected positions. I'd like to see 3 year terms for both congressman & senators.

6 years is too long for an elected senator.
6 years made sense for an appointed position prior to the passage of the 17th amendment. It just leads to abuse of power. you can see how stinky the senate is.

senate classes would also be eliminated.

with respect to the congressman's current 2 year term, the problem with it is that during the 2nd term they are spending much of their time campaigning.

extending the election cycle by 3 years is also a good reason.

total of 9 or 12 year term for either position.

I favor having the president having a 3 terms in office for a total of 12 years.

added to this

elected senators will have 2 super districts to run in.

if they ever return to an appointed senator, the term would be for 6 years, unlimited.

there could be an optional mix of the senate election format; 1 elected senator (3 year term, 4 terms) & 1 appointed senator (6 year term, unlimited).

The topic is term limits, and that's what is being discussed.

Fascinating that you've never heard the theory of how FDR supposedly had Long killed to prevent him from running for president in 1936. Even T. Harry Williams deals with the issue in his book but settles on Weiss acting alone for as yet unclear and personal reasons dismissing wholly an notion that FDR played a role in the assassination.

Victim of a staged traffic accident, he was snuffed out, like Huey Long, in the hospital by doctor-conspirators. Our elected Washington officials have an automatic raise unless they vote it out. Don't think they would vote to limit their gravy train.

I'm dubious that this assassination occurred. this requires actions to set off a chain of events for Mr. Weis's confrontation with Huey & the body guard knowing when he'll appear to be in timing position to pull this off.

I just believe that Long's bodyguards accidentally shot him during the melee.

Huey's death at the Hospital was odd, considering that he was in recovery.

Never argued that I believe this story, just that the story is out there ... and has been out there for years. A better doctor might have saved Long's life. A person today with that same wound would more than likely fully recover.
