And I would suggest you brush up on how the grid functions, Devo. An intricate and highly complex dance is required to tie all that generation and the plethora of interconnections together to provide stable, safe, consistent power levels for the people.
This is likely a grid problem. Renewable energy is cheaper and better for the environment than traditional energy sources like coal and gas but it does require a more robust grid to meet problems in supply and demand. By that I mean energy storage to even out demand and supply shocks.

Here is what the Times has reported.

Around noon on Monday, a high-voltage connection between France and Spain was interrupted, according to Kristian Ruby, secretary general of Eurelectric, a trade body that represents the European electricity industry. The power outage occurred just over 30 minutes later.

While that interruption would have been expected to be disruptive, it would not normally lead to a “system collapse” like the one that occurred on Monday, Mr. Ruby said. Some other complication would typically need to happen, “like a sudden outage at a power plant, a sudden development on the demand side,” he said. “Then you can have an incident like this.”

The exact cause has yet to be determined but I’m sure the exact culprit will be found soon. If nothing else so that liability can be taken and fixes proposed to make sure that this particular scenario doesn’t happen again.

Wired has an ok writeup so far

And as far as mitigation efforts to prevent future scenarios Europe has been due for a wakeup call and is desperately in need of a more comprehensive strategy, similar to the U.S. and Canada NERC standards that stemmed from that massive blackout on the east coast from the aughts.

They should be worried about that every day, though
