My brother and sister in law are liberal PhDs and professors of education related stuff. Both feel that the Constitution gives too much decentralized power to the states. They would much prefer a Parliamentary form of government as is found in most European countries along with the European Union's umbrella government over all of them. That is, of course, why the UK seceded from the EU.

I would say (but the leftists will not) that what the progressive left really stands for today is to replace the Constitution of our Republic with European national parliamentary form of government that has controlling power over the states.

The states, the original colonies that is, were all actually independent from each other.

FDR definitely advanced socialism to try and get out of the depression. It didn't work, but then Hitler rose to power and also Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and we had WWII. There was plenty of central planing, ration stamps, and black markets during the War. People put up with it as the enemy from Germany and Japan was greater than Socialism. After the War, people knew the destruction forces and corruption of Socialism. Since we repeat failed history Democrats love central planing, socialim, marxism etc. They love central power and corrupt politicians getting rich off the common man.
