I normally don't watch a movie more than once. Fantastic Mr Fox is one of the few exceptions.

It's a significant list although I do think John Ford and Billy Wilder belong on there somewhere. The Coen brothers might belong too but they don't have the body of wok some of these others have. Everything they've done has been good though. Of course, lists like this are made to be debated and picked apart. It depends on one's own perspective. Great post Russ!



Being great as in prolific and being influential can be two totally different lists.
Tarantino would be at the top of an influential list. He has certainly done things differently.

Orson Wells is at the top when it comes to influential.
Maybe Frank Capra too.
Ron Howard belongs on the list for being prolific.


A couple of my favorite directors are Sam Mendes and Christopher Nolan simply because I like how they took campy characters like 007 and Batman and made them more dark, troubled and human.
Oh, and you can't forget about Mel Brooks. Dude wasn't scared of offending anyone. By far the best pure comedy director.

Stanley Kubrick - A Clockwork Orange, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, Spartacus, and Full Metal Jacket.

Ridley Scott - Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, American Gangster, Prometheus, and The Martian.

Orson Welles - Citizen Kane, Othello, Macbeth, and Touch of Evil.

James Cameron - True Lies, The Terminator, Avatar, and The Abyss.

John Carpenter - Christine, The Fog, and Escape from New York.

Wes Craven - The Last House on the Left and A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Some Like it Hot is a fave of mine. Got lucky enough to see it on the big screen in a Summer Classic film fest a few years back.

Also agree with the Coen Brothers - they have brilliant work that isn't cookie cutter Hollywood.

It would be negligent not to mention Akira Kurasawa in the list of most influential directors. Some of the directors on the Russ' original list were inspired by his works including Coppola and Spielberg. George Lucas was inspired to create Star Wars based on a Kurasawa film.
He introduced or perfected many techniques in cinematography both on the set and in post production that revolutionized the way movies were made and presented.
He wrote and directed The Seven Samurai which has been remade several times as a classic western.
