This business is based on looks and most men find it quite attractive how well we maintain ourselves so the "it looks pretty" factor is a HUGE one given that I am a provider.

At the risk of sounding rude, but actually trying to be humorous here....
....I think I would prefer your nails slowly and gently scratching down my back while we were in the throes of ecstasy.......

While I like nail polish and manicured nails, I'm not a fan of the salon nails....would much rather see a woman with her natural nails (well groomed of course) than the salon nails.

Chloe very painful I have been there, now if you can find a old time pharmacy there is (Red Oil )made in Greensboro NC it works wonders. It pulls the soreness out within hours, good for burns, cuts, hangnails. I only found it in NC so when I moved to TX, I stocked up. My friends and family swear by it now. Its my miracle oil!

I don't understand what's upscale about needing you to have "pretty nails," unnecessary risk of damaging part of your body. You're much too pretty as is.

I'd tell them where to shove it! After all its your hands/nails that are getting ruined while trying to please a gent. If he doesn't like the fact that you take pride in your health and making sure your nails are as healthy as can be. He isn't worth your time.
What a gent should care about is that your nails are will kept. Trimmed, maybe a coat of clear polish and filed. Not that you spend 30 plus every two weeks for a french manicure that is slowly ruining your real nails. You can get infections/fungus in your nails.
Plus right now you are experiencing what happens when you have them on for too long and don't give your nails a breather. The nail is very soft and thin, weak and breaking. They will be this way for a good few months if you don't start proper nail treatment. It takes time to build your nails back up to what they should be!

My SO's nails were destroyed by a local nail salon it took over a year for them to heal to the point where she could get a manicure. For several months she couldn't even put nail polish on her nails. They were horrible looking but that never stepped in the way of our sex life.
If you can live without your nails all prettied up for while they heal do so. If you keep us occupied we probably wouldn't notice anyway.

Pardon me for being completely uninformed on this subject, but what is it about a manicure that cause so much damage and pain to nails?

when you have fake nails put on your fingers, they file/sand down your original nail to the point that they are paper thin. Not only when they are putting the chemicals on your nails, the person is wearing a mask. Which always made me wonder, why aren't i? After months/year of having a set of french manicured nails, your real nail becomes weak, thin and can start to grow bacteria and or fugues. It is best that every 6 weeks a lady lets her real nail breathe so to speak. To heal, to become strengthen. Other wise after a while, her nail will flake, break, grow fungus or host bacteria. In rare cases, some ladies nails have fallen off and never re grow back. Although I have never seen/heard of it first hand I have found it online and scares me enough to give my real nails a break!

Chloe ... when you talk about dealing with an upscale clientele who cares about these things, I wonder if they specifically mention a french manicure the way some guys would want a specific outfit or look or something.
I can see guys wanting someone to be manicured -- it's part of being put together -- I could see them wanting your nails polished or wearing a favorite color or something, but I'm not sure most guys would actually know the difference between clear polish and a french manicure (unless maybe they have a hand fetish).
I would imagine you can make your hands as gorgeous as the rest of you without needing to go the french manicure route (and from what I have heard my kids talk about -- and from what Anita posted -- gel nails would probably do it without the damage to your hands).
