RDuke- Eddie gave an interview on this subject. These are mainly his words. You can do your own research. I liked both versions of Van Halen. I am just saying that when they went populist with the album 1984 they lost thunder and became a circus act, imo. Roth's insanity really became apparent. EVH was and has since been one of the world's best guitarist.

Much like Townshend and others before him Eddie was seduced by the electronic keyboard/synthesizer. Roth never had enough musical influence or musicianship
To move the band in that direction. You are correct they became a circus act
But remember the time. Audio nosedived, video was everything and MTV
Ruled. I agree Roth was ready to embrace the video and sell out
And it killed the band.
Unless my memory fails me any videos with Van Hagar had concert footage
Or Eddie Eddie shown very cool. Example him playing piano at their house and
VB on the sofa in the background.
