Al Qaeda was created in the late 80's which splintered from the Mujahideen which had been created at the end of the Carter Adm. The Mujahideen was Zbigniew Brzezinski's brilliant idea. A way to fight a proxie war against Russia in Afghanistan.

yup the French got Ike to go into Vietnam. Keep it small looking for a way out pissed at the French. Keep it small and look for a way out was also JFK idea. Ir was LBJ that went in big time. Actually we started sending "military advisers" to the region in 1950. Sending military advisers is rarely a good sign. If we want to be precise the argument can be made that Truman got the ball rolling.

Dubya and his father had a personal vendetta against Saddam Hussein and were willing to do anything to get him. For whatever reason no one really knows. Dubya ignored all the advice on WMD and went ahead with a trillion dollar campaign that would end up getting Saddam.

So they ended up getting him at a huge cost. Looking back now Saddam was nothing compared to Isis and the terror groups since then. Now the war chest is empty and there is no more borrowed money left to wipe Isis out. If we learned anything from the past it's to get out of the middle east and let the crazies do what they want. The US will never win over hearts and minds over there. Whatever cash is left needs to be spent to protect American soil.
