To me it is.

One the one hand, I think people who choose the military as a career are performing a valuable service. I also believe that if you join at a time when the country is either embroiled in a war, or likely to become embroiled in a war, it takes quite a bit of balls.

On the other, over the course of the past 30 or so years, maybe a little more than that, military veterans get their asses kissed by society at large out of proportion to the risks they assume.

For example, federal and state governments give preference to (sometimes) underqualified military veterans over more qualified individuals with no military service in hiring.

On the one hand, persons serving in the military are grossly undercompensated. They make entry-level money, like teenagers working in fast-food restaurants or clothing stores.

On the other, the requirements for appointment into military service are roughly equivalent to the requirements for working in other entry-level jobs where we often find typical employees include vagrants and criminals.

Interestingly, and perhaps most importantly, a very good case can be made that the military is not the engine propelling American expansion and/or national security.

General George Washington, for one, certainly didn't think it was.

But that was a long time ago I guess.

This is what I truly believe. I would participate in a dialogue but I'm finding this topic too touchy for some people:

I think we pay our military service people in bullshit, contrived ceremonial acts/performances designed to trick both them and ourselves into believing we give a shit about them.

We kiss their asses at sporting events, we do the same on two or three designated holidays during the year, in order to make a show of them and satisfy ourselves that we appreciate what these people are doing, whatever that is. And I'm not going to entertain platitudes about how individuals in the military are somehow "saving us" . That's a different discussion which I believe flies way way over the head of people who enjoy reacting emotionally to bullshit like made-up national holidays.

Instead or receiving these kind of hollow, irrelevant accolades, I would think military personnel would be better served being compensated in the form of income. No?

In my professional field, participants receive few accolades for their "sacrifice" or "courage" or any of this bullshit. We get paid money.

I guess it depends on how you prefer to be rewarded?

I'm not sure what, let's say, a colonel or whatever equivalent rank or title in any branch of the US military receives the form of monetary compensation. And I'm including sweetheart benefit packages, etc. Which by the way are not truly sweetheart packages.

I'm willing to bet that I make a minimum of three times as much, probably 8 times as much, or maybe more.

Of course, regular people run different kinds of risks, and I suppose to some degree it's one's choice to undertake the risks that they (pretty much) voluntarily assume.

The fucking I get is there's no national holiday dedicated to me. This shatters my heart.

In my professional life, I can be awarded a hazard pay for working in arbitrarily defined 'dangerous' conditions. Don't get me wrong, the conditions are potentially life-threatening, but not to the point of combat that our veterans underwent.

The amount that I receive is an extra 75 cents per hour. So in a normal eight hour shift (during which I will usually not get any breaks) I will make an extra 6 dollars per day. Before taxes. For danger pay. In conditions where people do get injured to the point where they never are able to work again.

I suppose the point I'm trying to make is that while society really doesn't have the resources to adequately reward or recognize the hazard that some members risk for the sake of others, they had damn well better make the attempt.
