not to nitpick but I looked it up when you commented about it being a horse racing thing because I thought it was mostly a term for motorized racing.

The term has its origins in horse racing, in which the fastest qualifying horse would be placed on the inside part of the course, next to the pole.


so you were right originally though the term is now more common in motorized racing events (from looking it up also).
