So what I'm asking is why would one consider doing this.
You can get the cherry on top by simply paying for it and dispensing with the make-believe altruism.
I'm genuinely curious.

Some altruism isn't make believe. Some have convinced themselves that it is genuine. Others try to convince others that it's genuine. the motivations for all but the first can vary I guess. Example: bargain pussy. I think your advice to just pay for it is sound.
