In montrose area I strongly recommend:
Brooklyn Athletic club (burger is fantastic. New duck with mole is incredible. Chef Will is both very talented and unpretentious). Great staff and atmosphere too. perfect for the gorgeous fall weather.
Casa de Caballo (Mexican Steakhouse)
Indika (elegant Indian)
Underbelly (fabulous american/fusion classics and reinterpretations)
Auntie Changs Dumpling House (fast, cheap, quality chinese)
Sorrentos (Italian not all ready mentioned that is good and priced fairly).
There are many, many more--Montrose is a foodie mecca currently. From Hugo's to El Tiempo, to the food trucks mexican can be had in all its various mezclas con Tex, or not.
The only mention so far I would disagree with is Michaleangelos--which has a great patio complete with tree but the food is very average IMHO. Still eat there because of the tree.
Double the vote for ROOST. I think its spectacular.
My favorite in Houston is THE PASS and its Siamese sister daily dining restaurant: Provisions. Go to provisions for lunch and THE PASS for dinner. If you are a foodie you will very likely love it....and yes the PASS is expensive but I consider it a great value (amazing quality for the price).
