I'll usually circle the place once to learn entrances and exits. If I arrive early I put on my bluetooth headset and organize my thoughts aloud / it sounds like I am bossing someone around to anyone within earshot. If I still get confused I pretend I am talking to someone about making a grocery list or where I would take someone for a date while walking. Dont't neglect the facial expressions!
As it has already been stated, just do your best to blend into your surroundings. Clothes and car if needed.
