Two Dallas-area men are accused of killing a Houston man who rose to fame last month for having sex with a stranger on a Las Vegas Ferris wheel.
Phillip Frank Panzica III was arrested last month after he had sex with a New York woman aboard Las Vegas’ High Roller, billed as one of the world’s tallest Ferris wheels.
He made headlines and even talked to reporters about the incident, which he said he regretted.
Bryant Christopher Watts, 29, and Aaron Jones, 31, face capital murder charges in the 27-year-old man’s death, the Houston Chroniclereports.
The two are accused of carjacking Panzica early Saturday as he drove home with his fiancee from the southeast Houston strip club where she works. It is unclear whether Panzica knew the two men.
“You need to come clean,” Watts is accused of saying before he shot Panzica several times while his fiancee sat in the passenger’s seat.
Authorities told the Chronicle that the two men dumped Panzica on the side of the road and made his fiancee get out of the car.
They drove away with the cash she’d made at work, reports say.
A sheriff’s deputy spotted the stolen SUV in Menard County, in Central Texas, and pursued it into Concho County, where the two men were arrested.
Watts reportedly confessed to the fatal carjacking. Dallas County court records show he has a lengthy rap sheet that includes bribery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and drug possession convictions.
Panzica and his fiancee made headlines in early February after the Ferris wheel incident derailed their wedding plans in Las Vegas.
Panzica told a TV station that he was supposed to marry his fiancee in Las Vegas but fought with her the day of their wedding because he thought she was pregnant with another man’s baby.
While gambling, drinking and partying on the Vegas Strip, Panzica said he met a New Yorker named Chloe Scordianos. The two allegedly linked up on the High Roller, which offers a 30-minute ride nearly 550 feet in the air.
“It wasn’t planned, I just felt it,” Panzica said.
His fiancee posted his bail two days later, and the two told KABC-TV that they planned to stay together in spite of the sex scandal.

Four illegal immigrants from Guatemala are facing charges that they attacked a man and a woman at knifepoint in Framingham last week. Two of the men had previously been deported, federal immigration officials said.
The Framingham couple told police that they were walking home from a store on March 13 when they encountered several men who were “intoxicated and stumbling” on the street, according to records in Framingham District Court.
At first, the woman told police, the men were friendly and offered her boyfriend a beer. But then, she said, one man propositioned her for sex. When she refused, she said two of the men dragged her to a nearby apartment. There, the men sexually assaulted her and beat her boyfriend, she told police. Her boyfriend told police that two of the men threatened them with knives and several threatened to kill them. The court redacted the couple’s names from the police report.
All four men have pleaded not guilty.
Ariel Diaz, 24, was ordered held without bail last week on charges of unarmed robbery, indecent assault, and other assault charges for allegedly kicking the woman’s boyfriend and menacing him with a knife. The boyfriend said Diaz threatened to “carve” him up and “rape your girl.”
The other three men were scheduled for a dangerousness hearing Monday but it was postponed until Thursday so that defense lawyers could review new evidence introduced by the prosecution, including a video. At least two of the men are believed to be brothers, according to the police report.
Elmer Diaz, 19, is charged with rape; assault with a dangerous weapon, a knife; kidnapping; and threatening to commit a crime.
Adan Diaz, 32, is charged with indecent assault and battery and kidnapping.
Marlon Josue Jarquin-Felipe, 27, is charged with kidnapping and indecent assault and battery.
After the dangerousness hearing was postponed, Jarquin-Felipe’s lawyer, Robert Mark Costello, said he knew of no physical evidence connecting the men to the alleged attack.
“So far it’s all been allegations,” Costello said.
In court records, police said they searched the suspects’ apartment the next day and found a cellphone belonging to one alleged victim and a cellphone belonging to another outside.
One of the victims positively identified two of the suspects in a police lineup, according to court records, but the police reports are redacted so it is unclear which victim identified the men.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said they have issued detainers for all four men so that they can be taken into custody if they are freed. They said Ariel Diaz and Jarquin-Felipe were both deported in 2014 and apparently reentered the United States illegally. Reentry after deportation is a federal crime.
ICE officials did not say Monday whether they would pursue additional charges against the men.
However, immigration officials said Ariel Diaz was arrested in December 2015 and immigration officials were not notified of the arrest, but it was unclear why.
