Almost all prepared foods are NOT covered by snap, but some unhealthy stuff is. White bread is NOT healthy, but it's certainly available. SNAP for the most part does it's part to provide food that is both available and nutritious. The problem with american's diets is more from the fact that suppliers offer terrible choices full of salts and fats that are not needed in the normal diets.
BTW- in order to be considered Obese- you have a BMI of more than 30. based on Height to Weight. In fact, you could simply look at 90% of the people who visit ANY Walmart in the USA, and see that they are Obese, and by comparison- those who visit Whole Foods is likely half that rate. Now- that comparison likely is a good demonstration that the real definition of health is "Can you afford Healthy Food", vs. is healthy food available. Most of the precooked stuff or even things like lunchmeat and some cheese are not particularly healthy. Who's fault is that?? It's what sells at the majority of stores, and that's why retailers continue to sell it. NOW- go to a store that has healthy alternatives- and you'll see that there ARE completely different offerings, and they cost a lot more too.
To simply say this is about fatties making bad choices and perpetuating a cycle is not 100% the fault of the families. The AVG. snap benefit is under 200 dollars, so imagine feeding your family of 2, 3, 4 or more on 200 dollars a month; Will you skimp on quantity vs. quality. Yeah...probably. Most ppl run out of money before they run out of month. The solution is NOT killing SNAP benefits, but rather controlling what they can be used to buy and how much stores profit off those " listed good items".
Go to the hood and buy the same shitty food and it costs 2x the cost of the average grocery store. There is a lot of ppl getting fat off of bad choices and for the wrong reasons. I for one, cannot blame moms who need to stretch dollars for a month, vs. having a bare cupboard. What Junkfood do you think is being bought that should be eliminated from those funds?
Speaking of Obese - I bet 50% of board members are at a BMI of OVER 30 by far; And likely it's the older cats here who are of that situation.
