We got pretty lucky. Power barely flickered and our condo complex actually came out pretty far ahead in $$$ after the insurance company just cut us a check for the damage (it cost way less to fix it than the amount they gave us).

junior year of high school, very little was done in class that week due to the lack of power and the amount of people who didn't show up.
Good times.

Lost power for 2.5 weeks. Been through cyclones from The Phillipines to New York. We need a good storm once in awhile to flush the crap off the streets.

Lost power for about 10 hours and had a neighbor's tree in my front yard and broken glass on gas lamps. Everyone on the street pulled out all the firearms they had. Helped people across the street with food and refrigeration as they were out of electric for two weeks. SO went out of town for a week and had 2 different female friends off and on stay with me. They showed their gratitude. Way to go WU. This sucked for everybody. I got very lucky.

That's admirable Sir.
It's hard to believe some people won't heed the warning from officials and stay in place during a MANDATORY EVACUATION!

I don't understand going in and getting people that defy a mandatory evacuation. Why should anyone have to risk their lives to save someone that is going out their way to end theirs.
I was without power for thirteen-and-a-half days. I had gas though to heat the water and cook with. I also had (still do) a gene big enough to fire my whole house and my downstairs a/c, but if I'd have done that I couldn't have shared my power with my two neighbors. So I had a spider web of extension cords all over my house to power the lights, frige, dishwasher and fans, but sadly, no a/c.
We had a killer party the night of the storm. Great food, wine and company. My house didn't even flood when it was just a rental property during Allison. When I tore that house down and built this one, I built it up another 18". We were high and dry, and fired the generator the next morning.
I had a ton leaves and twigs, no even limbs, down in the front and back yards that I had to clean up. But other than putting my patio furniture back out, I had literally no damage. Weird thing though, and I swear this is true. My generator was so heavy and got so hot, it left a little indention in my concrete drive. Seriously.
I went to go check on the houses I was building the next morning. Not much damage at all. I was surprised given they weren't even dried in yet and the structural support I used was denny board sheathing which is flimsy to say the least.
The next day I went to Sugar Land to find fuel. We saw some gigantic military helicopters getting refueled in mid-air. Pretty cool. After about a week, we started running out of food and the grocery stores still didn't have food. My assistant and I loaded up my Escalade drove towards Victoria and hit an HEB in Wharton. We brought food back for my sister and a few other friends too.
I'm none too keen to do it again. I like hurricanes like Rita.

I suppose, but Category 5 tide surge and Category 4 winds don't seem the time to do it.
I don't know why they can't just make those people leave. Get your cat, get all the shit you can carry and let's go seems reasonable to me.

When you get a 911 call from a 68 year old elderly couple stranded on the roof of their house, you go...helos ain't flying in that shit, the ground guys have to go in, and the scouts have to lead the way because civil authorities don't have the vehicles for that...
Great thing about HEMTTs and MTVs is that they have central tire inflation systems. We could let a lot of air out of our tires so we wouldn't float away while driving to the locations, almost totally deflate them once we got where we needed to go to anchor ourselves to the ground so the boats could disembark, then reinflate them once we had the boat full of civilians on board...

I distinctly remember the mayor of Galveston going on television and say "Evacuate, there will be no civil services available to rescue you." That would be all that I need to hear.
