Count me in the group that finds it annoying but here's a little trick when your favorite gets moved off the "front page" (and avoid spending a half an hour searching for it)

Each of the smilies are really simple code. For example 2 of my favorites are and which are COLONcheersCOLON and COLONroflmaoCOLON (use the : instead of spelling out COLON). If you have a couple of favorites I find it easier to just memorize the code and type it instead of trying to figure out where St. Chris hid it today

I love having smilies. I just hate having more than I can keep in my head (which isn't many, since I'm a bear of very little brain) and no way to search to find one I need that I've not memorized.

Had I designed this UI, the smilies displayed to the right in the "reply to thread" window would be the ones that are most used by people; I wouldn't think of rotating them all around. But that's me. I suppose I can understand how others might like seeing a variety...
