To be fair to Newt, and quite frankly, I don't know why anyone would want to be fair to Newt, he did say that what he wanted to do was to leverage current dollars spent to coordinate a private effort to plant a base on the moon. He wasn't talking about increasing spending.

I'm not going to take a position whether that is good or bad. But I do agree we would be creating more problems than we need if we let China control space. Space needs to be kept free for scientific studies, and possibly defensive weapons. I don't think posting offensive weapons in space is good for anybody, which is what China will likely do.

I'm defending Newt. Gawd, I need a shower.
