Default KING of the Dollar

... G'day Stumpers,

... Been busy today - tryin' like Jack-the-Lad to
get confirmation from the US Mint about the idea
to put President Trump onto a commemorative coin.
A special dollar ($1) coin - like those ones for
Susan B. Anthony years ago.

... Hopefully it will be a go - and President Trump
would then be The King of The Dollar...

... Now, it would be re-miss of me to not push
for another - so I'm hoping that the US Treasury
will then honour me idea to commemorate
Hillary Clinton - and put her face onto the
new three-dollar bill... ($3) ... ...

... Wish me luck, mates! ...

Be another failure.

The limeys did a bloody good job designing a pound coin back in the day. You could easily identify it when you put your digits amongst the coinage in your pocket.

I like the idea in a way, but I would feel much better about out it when his term is complete.

The USA has never honored a living president that way.

At the birth of the Nation, before any traditions had been established, George Washington could easily have been made King by acclimation . . .and he declined.

Years later, when he had been elected the first President of the new United States, his supporters wanted to address himm as "Your Excellency" and he wouldn't hear of it, insisting instead of being called merely "Mister President".

So, No coin just yer. Maybe later mon . . .along with a place on Mount Rushmore.

Ding nabbit ####SALTY! I wished you had said something earlier. I had already submitted the Obama's photo, in honor of their anniversary, for the $3 bill.

It’ll never happen. He will go down in history as a failure. And will be forgotten as yesterday’s trash.

If you think putting Trump’s face on a dollar coin will get Americans to start using dollar coins you can forget it. Nothing will get them to stop using a paper bill over carrying coins.

... We'll see how it goes, mate... I'll probably get a
confirmation early next week. ... Not sure just WHEN
this would happen - maybe once President Trump is off,
but maybe sooner. ... But I DO hope they take me idea
seriously and they give it a go. ...

... Then, once THIS is accomplished, we can work on seeing
President Trump's likeness adorning Mount Rushmore! ...

I second that.

The government has tried to get dollar coins into general usage twice that I can recall. Both the Susen B. Anthony coin and the Sacajawea coin were not welcomed by the American public.

What I could imagine happening is the mint issuing a silver dollar coin. Some folks would pay a premium to have them and iff they were pure silver (.999 fine) some folks would buy them to "stack" as a store of value.

More appropriately would be a gold coin.

If the US government does not do this at some point, some private outfit such as the Franklin Mint, eventually will.

I don't see any of this happening with a Joe Biden coin though.

is it even legal for sitting president to force the US mint to make a coin with his face?

AI
--

Illegal for general circulation: A sitting president cannot just have coins minted with their face for everyday use.

Potentially legal under strict conditions: A commemorative coin could be authorized by Congress, but it would be highly unusual and politically controversial.

1. U.S. Mint Authority

  • The U.S. Mint is the only entity authorized to produce official U.S. coins (dollars, quarters, half-dollars, etc.).
  • Coins with legal tender status are controlled by federal law; the President cannot unilaterally order coins with their own image for general circulation.
2. Tradition & Law

  • By law and tradition, living people are generally not depicted on circulating U.S. coins.
    • Current law allows designs to honor deceased persons or symbolic figures.
    • Congress must authorize special commemorative coins.
  • Example: George Washington is on the quarter, Abraham Lincoln on the penny. These people were long deceased when first depicted.
3. Commemorative Coins

  • Congress can authorize the Mint to produce commemorative coins, which are usually sold as collectibles, not for everyday transactions.
  • Even then, it’s extremely unlikely and unprecedented for a coin featuring a sitting president’s face to be legally minted for circulation.
4. Conflict of Interest / Ethics

  • If a sitting president tried to get coins minted with their own face, it could raise ethics questions:
    • Using federal resources for personal glorification could violate federal ethics rules or anti-corruption statutes.
    • Historically, presidents do not appear on coins while in office for these reason
