I haven't studied up on this very much eccieuser. After reading Yssup's post I read something on the Google News web site that would indeed indicate user clicks and searches play a part in selecting headlines. Also Google asks media outlets to highlight the stories they think are important, and I think Google employees get involved in the selection process. And finally your browsing history could play a part in what you see -- not for me though because I'd just erased my history. I'm sneaking around on eccie while someone's in the next office, and if she sees my browsing history (eccie and midget porn) all my attempts at romancing her will go down the drain.
