"Referral"?

In my profile, there is a "Referral" field with zero in it. How does that apply to a hobbyist? I think I understand how if applies to providers. Just wondering if it is used in some way for hobbyists.

Referrals work the same for all members. When new members register their accounts they may provide the handle of the member that referred them. That referring member then has his referral count incremented by 1.
