When I first moved to LR it intimidated me as I'd never lived in a city of this size before. What I did that helped me is drive around downtown during the middle of the day (or you could do it in the middle of the night too if you're so inclined). Basically any time where the streets aren't busy. If you drive around while most people are at work and off the roads you can familiarize yourself without being rushed by a bunch of other cars behind you. That's what is more likely to make me nervous...people right behind me rushing me. If I can take 2 seconds I can figure it out. Just one man's opinion...

That is a good suggestion. The weekends are very light traffic and it would be way less stressful to ease around.

A friend of mine once commented that you could tell that the Kiefer Sutherland TV series 24 was fake as hell, because if it really played out in real time (a season of 24 was made up of 24 one-hour episodes representing one complete day in Los Angeles) half of the season's episodes would have been Jack Bauer sitting in traffic for the entire episode...

Cheers

There are still some paper maps around. They always work! You can develop a mental picture that you can't get by some voice saying "turn left on 3rd st". If you have a mental picture, you always have a mental map of at least the major thoroughfares. I negotiated every city in the US and some in Canada with paper maps before there was GPS.Sometimes the more modern solution is not a better solution.

I prefer the old sun rises in the east sets in the west to navigate by, none of them new fancy paper maps for me. Drive long enough in circles you will eventually find what you are looking for, and never ever ask for directions, you'll get your hubcaps stole.
