If there is an idiot here...it's none of the guys posting above. I can personally attest to them not being "retards." Additionally, probably like you, one of my favorite mnemonics is "I before E except after C," but there are always exceptions to every rule.
That said, I don't think the PM seems strange. Not unless you think it's someone she knows trying to get personal info about her. The guy is new, without PA, and has been lurking and might not feel comfortable posting. Unless the question itself is sketchy, then I think it's rather normal.
I get dozens of emails a day from people who don't post on the boards. Take it as a compliment that someone (God knows why) values your input.
