I have never been to a banked track, I bet that would be pretty cool though although I like it either way. And I think on my 2nd or 3rd derby, my brother got hit in the face by dirty britches nub. LOL it was quite funny.
I love the outfits and the girls are hot, but I would rather GO to a sporting event than participate in one. I am not the rough and tough type! haha I might get an outfit and dress up like it though that could be fun

Thanks, LW for the mention of Dirty Britches. She had the foulest mouth and biggest swinging dick of any derby girl I've met. I literally cannot describe some of the nasty things I've seen her do, at after parties and just socially. Loads of fun. She got married and has a kid now -- as straight laced a mom as you can imagine. Kind of amazing.

KCRW has their after parties at Duke's on Grand (where Willie's used to be). The next bout is April 6. Come on by. You can always stumble over to Temptations after you are done dancing with derby girls.

There's a banked track league that's trying to get off the ground.

As LW says, running a banked track is a pain in the butt. Unless you have a permanent space for it -- meaning paying rent even when you don't have any bouts coming in -- then you are constantly setting it up and tearing it down. It barely fits into a space that a flat track is designed for, and unless you have even more room for risers there's nowhere for the spectators to see the action.

That said, Kansas City has invited some of the best skaters in the country (aka "Team Bionic") to come and skate banked track against the regional all-stars this summer. There may even be a co-ed bout. It should be awesome.

Roller Derby used to be tough gals that fueled semis or worked at the GM Leeds plant.

Now it's girls with more tattoos than toughness. Like the one from the TV antique shop - American Peckerwoods, or whatever that's called.

Maybe some day there will be a female roller derby version of Rowdy Roddy Piper. But I'm not holding my breath for that.

You realize that Rowdy Roddy Piper was an actor, right? He pretended to wrestle people according to a script that was written for him by his promoters. I'm not denying that he was tough, or that he was in good shape, but he wasn't an athlete.

The "tough gals that fueled semis" were putting on a show, not participating in a sport. It may have been a great show, but it was really no different from a production of "Annie" except less singing and more lesbians.

Good point, but there are a few local gals in the Teamsters and Ironworkers that could really turn roller derby into something worth watching.

They don't practice at Winnwood anymore. KCRW just opened a new practice space of their very own, something very few other teams in the country have.

Like I said, I've traveled with the team. I've hung out in their rooms at the after-after parties; driven them around different cities looking for a karaoke bar, strip club, or both (which we managed to find in Lincoln last year); and had them sleep on my couch when practice ran late.

Well, I think it is worth watching now, but they'd love to have any of the Teamsters or Ironworkers try out for the league. The recreational league starts up in a couple of weeks. If they can skate they can try out for the Warriors next year.

Well, since this thread was bumped, I'll chime in and let people know that KCRW has started a winter season designed to get back to their roots and get fans pumped up before the regular summer season starts.

Winter bouts will be held at Winnwood -- it only holds a few hundred people so the bouts are a lot more intimate. You are right on the floor with the ladies skating by. They have a bout next Sunday afternoon, January 12. Since the Chiefs won't be playing, you all should come out. http://kcrollerwarriors.com for tickets or information.
