So lets just put our points out there & not raise each others blood presser. This place is somewhere where I can say what I want by typing the way i want with out offending someone else its not what you type about someone its about how you type someone. PEACE

I did not see any insults in this message that says PEACE.

If any of us cannot discard old grudges, then it will be difficult to have a civil debate/discussion.

Many of these threads discuss issues that have become very emotional and personal for some of us. From my view, if I am unable to set those emotions aside for a moment, then I will be unable to hear the opposing arguments and unable understand different points of view.

My positions are based on my current understanding of the facts of various issues. I participate in these "lively" discussions, regardless of how I feel about the issues, to improve my knowledge base.

Perhaps some of my veil of ignorance may be lifted as a result.

Mike that is how it should be for all. Without open debate, which means you really listen to the other side and try and see the merit in their words. They may not change your opinion but you learn where the other person is coming from. What has happened in this country is both sides absoultely think they are right, are no longer open to compromise, until recent years our government has always worked through compromise. Since there is no longer room for compromise, we see a government unable to solve problems, which is exactly what we have now. Neither side is always right nor is either side always wrong.

Hey Mikie, read some of the other things written and then claim no insults.

My confession; this antipathy goes back about 17 years ago when I was taking classes at Maple Woods. A student wrote a scathing account of the Marine Corps ball in Washington DC. Something about money wasted on people who shouldn't even have a job. I wrote a letter, that was printed, calling him out for being an ignorant fool. He responded with another scathing letter that was intentionally insulting to me a veteran. I called the paper's office and found that he was in. I only live 5 miles from MW so...
First he denied being the guy (he's not here right now) and when I looked for a supervisor he copted. We had a discussion where he apologized and admitted he had no knowledge of Marines or their ball. He looked very relieved when I turned to leave. He then said "Peace Out". That me turn around and chew out his sorry behind for being a shit. Everytime I hear that stupid "Peace" I flash back to this jackass. He probably works for some newspaper making up stories about things he has no knowledge of.

John_Galt,
Understand your position and I say good show in confronting the bozos in question. I, too confronted an editorialist at the KC Star and our discussion was civil. Talking to him clarified my misunderstandings and visa versa. He wasn't the coward(s) with whom you spoke and during our talk, I learned he was a Marine having served in Vietnam. As vets, we then chatted on things back then. Again, "Good Show" for putting those A**Holes in their place. Also, thanks for your military service.

HeyMikie,

So, you don't see anything wrong with "Peace". How about "I will pray for you", or "God Bless You", or "Praise God", or "Fuck off"; all placed at the end of the sentence, or discussion. They are all: "The final word"; designed to end a discussion and cut off any response. They all say, "I am right and no other discussion is allowed; and this is ended in a way that does not allow any input from you. Peace

Cheaper, I put my ass on the line more than once those long years ago. Like Winston Churchill once said, "The most exciting thing in the world is to be shot at...and missed!". Been there, done that, and, yes, I do have the T-shirt strangely enough.

Apparently civil discussion is much more difficult in practice than concept.

It appeared (to me, anyway) that Cheaper opened this particular thread as a call for less contentious discourse. The postscriptus: "PEACE" seemed by context to neither be an endorsement of Peace Movements (the naive belief that peace can be maintained without strength), nor to be a hermetic seal on further conversation (if that WAS the intent, it caused a remarkably strong inverse effect). My read was more along the lines of "live long and prosper" or from the old westerns, the "peace" issued by native American Indians.

Like the native American's hopes, this wish appeared short-lived, with multiple ripostes claiming said PEACE to be repugnant. (JG, I'll take your admission of antipathy for the juxtaposition of insults and PEACE to be a spontaneous outburst, rather than directed at Cheaper)

Others, "bless their hearts" (learned that in the South, God love 'em), couldn't let the PEACE pass without an immediately backlash against the dismissive phrases of the evangelically inclined (somebody in Sunday School must have really left a bad impression). Although why anyone would impugn "Fuck Off" as anything but a good wish on ECCIE is a bewilderment.

Oh well, it keeps the discussions "lively".

I'll descend to cliche to make my original point.

Don't sweat the petty things, pet the sweaty things. It's not that deep.

May you all live in interesting times.

I can't recall that I've seen anyone ask this....What's the deal with Cheaper2buyit?
On a different forum I once read for an unrelated subject, I saw someone whose writing was similar. His explanation was that he had recieved some kind of work-related injury to his head or something which prevented him from writing coherently anymore. If I sound condescending, I don't mean to be. I'm genuinely curious.
