What do you call it when a catepillar goes into the hibernation phase to turn into a butterfly? Pupae or something?

They are clock weights … like for a cookoo clock. They are in the shape of a pine cone, hence the lighter colored areas. From what I can see in the unfocused background, you can also see the chain that hangs down on the other side. Pull on the chain, the weight goes up and provides the tension to keep the clock/chimes/cookoo running.

Yep it is a pupa (plural: pupae) stage but this pic isn't that these are made of metal. You cansee the seams of the casting mold in larger weight.

Looks like some type of crustacean face my guess is either lobster/crayfish or maybe some kind of crab but will go with my first guess of lobster.

Eyes not compound (multiple lenses) so not an insect, eyes on stalks say crustacean. Reasons for my guess

Hmmmm my guesses (sorry taking two on this one)
1) inside of some kind of fungal growth <= first thought
2) inside if some kind of mineral deposit like in a hot springs. <= main guess
