Exclamation High Tech Car Doors

I don't know about you folks, but personally the way that doors on cars are designed today is something that has bothered me for years.

Doors on cars today are essentially the same design our grandparents had on their Model T's and they bug me each time I open them in tight quarters and have to squeeze out sideways.

I had been toying with designing a really radical door design for years, but it looks like someone finally came up with an elegant design!

. . . Say hello to the future!

Yeaaaaa they open then close, and they have to let people in from the toddler to the Obese. What, should we pour people in from the roof?

They were just flirting.

Interesting concept . . . but I am thincking about the safety of the doors. And how could first responders can open the doors when severely damaged. Not sure the jaws of life would work.

Actually the concept is not new at all. GM did it with the tailgates of its station wagons from 1972 to 1976.

The tailgate would disappear downward into the deck and the rear window would disappear upward into the roof.

You really need to learn how to look before you leap.

Marshal, you are right! Got mixed up on which forum I was in, my apologies for that.

Let the jousting continue!

It takes battery power to raise the door. That was a real problem with the Bricklin. Door operation drained the batteries all the time. I also thought about the safety issues. With a clam shell door, it's hard enough to pry the door open. This would be harder than a clam shell. I also wonder what holds the door up at the roof line. That latch has a lot of loaded weight on it. And even if you can pry there, the space into which the door folds/falls has to be undamaged to pry it open. Also like the old Mercedes SL gullwings and the Bricklin, it tends to rain into the car with a door like this.

Lots of obvious problems without even trying it out in the real world.
