TV commercials for home security systems?
I was just walking through the living room when yet another one of those ads where a woman and her kid were home alonr and a bad guy kicks in the door.
Alarm sounds and she runs upstairs screaming with her kid to answer the phone.
WTF?
Instead of running for the door, if she would have grabbed the shotgun or handgun and blasted the guy away, THEN had the alarm company send the police I'd be happy.
Giving a false sense of security that somehow having an alarm system is going to keep you safe and alive is a joke.
In Dallas, with the huge number of residential alarms going off all the time, the response time for a patrol unit to arrive is probably at least 20 minutes. Plenty of time for the bad guy to rape, rob and then kidnap your child.
I must ask, especially for the ladies on here, do those commercials annoy you as much as they annoy me?
Keep in mind they ALWAYS have the women in need of the alarm, I haven't seen one where the homeowner is home and is male.

I have an alarm and a loaded pistol in the nightstand. I feel pretty safe with those deterrents.

Obviously they are using the "fear tactic" to sell the product. Why don't they ever show a man caught off guard in those commercials?
It's sad but true, women can't even walk alone in a dark parking lot, take an innocent jog in the park or trust a stranger without fear of being abducted.
There aren't any self defense classes for men...

This is the standard approach used by alarm monitoring facilities (central stations). They will call before dispatching emergency services (except fire) simply because of the false alarms generated by pets, cleaning personnel and less than knowledgable people who have alarms. They also do this because many communities limit false alarm dispatches and will either refuse to respond, pull your alarm license or bill the heck out of you, maybe all three. Typically there are stored passwords available to monitoring personnel so they can determine if it is an emergency situation, the real reason for the call.
In reality, you are just as safe with the shotgun, if not moreso. I put my trust in H&K.

What gets me is the stupid woman takes her child up stairs and does she secure the child? No. Does she do anything to keep the child safe? Head for the bedroom/bathroom and lock the door? Anything? No. The stupid cow stops in the hallway and answers the cordless phone. She doesn't even grab it and keep running. WTF? How does she know the intruder ran away? I would head for the safest room in my house and prepare to defend my child. Those commercials are insulting in the way they portray women as helpless, defenseless and stupid.

I use to live in Prestonwood, Preston & Arapho and we had a deal where everybody paid for 24 hour security with DPD. It is late and I cannot think of the name of it but it was a good deal

I have never used an alarm system and I have never had my house broken into. My current house had a system in it when I bought it but I took it out during the re-model. I have a 90lb dog, nobody is interested to see if I have a gun, all is well.

I've met folks that work for Broadview Security. Not exactly the folks I want looking out for me.
I prefer fine products from Glock, Browning, Smith & Wesson to name but a few.
Ever see the results from a .50 cal? Awesome!

A big or even medium sized dog is a good deterrent, as long as they are somewhat aggressive. I had a wonderful Lab mix that was as sweet as could be but could be a little aggressive if you approached her when she was behind the fence. It wasn't two weeks after she died that we were burglarized. A good dog ( for an alarm system ) and guns ( .45cal. hand gun and 12ga. short barreled shotgun ) can't be beat. The more the better. I have them spread all around the house, even the garage, LOL.

What I think is funny is when the phone rings the Woman says: "Hello" I would be screaming "Get the F**k over here."

A long time ago I worked for an ADT affiliate company in Dallas.
To this day I will never forget what they taught me about home security. Also... how easy it is to break into someone's home. It's almost too easy.
The system is a deterant only. It will not keep you safe.
#1 Deterant - Dog. Believe it or not the best deterant dog to have is the small yappy dog. Large dogs defend their space/territory and will bark if their space is invaded... so if you keep a large dog in the back yard and someone breaks into your house on the side the dog (for the most part) will remain silent. However a little yappy dog is the one that never shuts up. Barks constantly if someone even walks down the street, hears the slightest little noise and starts yapping. If you've ever taken a walk in your neighborhood you know the houses that have those yappy dogs. Well a potential robber/burglar knows these houses too and stays away. Some large dogs are too friendly... they are more than likely going to lick the burglar to death before they bark at him. The yappy dog is happy to see the burglar and wants attention.
#2 Deterant - Security Sign. I'm not promoting theft but the security company will provide you with a sign to put outside your house. Generally they will give you 2 signs... one for the front and back. These signs get stolen all the time and the security company will replace it if one gets stolen from you. I'm not sure if the statistic changed or not but back in 2000, 34% of the homes with a security sign like ADT or Brinks in the front yard had no security system in the house what-so-ever. They just stole the sign from somebody else or they had a family member give them a sign to put out front. It is a false sense of security but it works.
#3 Deterant - Motion Lights. Pretty self explanitory there.
Ultimately if someone wants you dead... the security system is not going to stop the attempt. Yes I realize that having a gun in the house can make you feel better but unless you are sitting there with the gun or carry it around in a holster all day in the house/Apt... it isn't going to do you much good. In fact you are more likely to shoot and kill someone by mistake then for self defense. So if you do have a gun in the house and you don't carry it around with you make it as hard as possible for someone to break in. 3 inch galvanized screws should be placed on your deadbolt lock plates that go into the studs in the door jams. Incase there is a fire this will piss off the Fire Department because doors are designed to break away easily for someone to come in. That is why the door jams are made of pine and the screws to hold them on are about 3cm long. This will atleast slow down a killer or attacker and give you enough time to go and get your gun.

I have an alarm system, and I keep it on at all times after dark.
My daughter and I have gone over plans if ever an emergency such as described in the commercial happens. She is to immediately run in her room, lock her door, go into her bathroom, lock that door...and wait until she hears me give the "OK"..after I shoot the fucker with my .38 which us always close by.
And if the first shot doesn't kill him, I'll calmly shoot out both his kneecaps as I s-l-o-w-l-y call 911.
