Why can't they just ask him ? Or, has he been asked, with no response ?

because of the deal he may not be required to say anything about it. either these people were targeted for some reason or it was random. i don't buy random, there must be some link to Kohberger to the victim(s). and for some reason he spared two others
. possibly they had no link to Kohberger so weren't who he was targeting. or he wasn't aware of the others until he was leaving and was spotted by one of the survivors and felt he needed to escape the scene.
the families were split on the deal, for one none of them were consulted and it caught them off guard. some wanted the death penalty and others are ok with life without parole. you have to weight this in terms of the families would have to relive the murders if it went to trial. and there's always the possibility Kohberger gets acquitted but that's a rather slim chance.
Kohberger's lawyers tried and failed to get DNA evidence dismissed and tried to submit alternate testing which the judge rejected so his lawyers told him the odds were heavy in the favor of the prosecutor to get convictions
this was his only option to avoid the death penalty.
