The Importance of a Hobby Email
So, I know that a lot of people have separate hobby emails but many of you (I'm speaking primarily to the men here) use an email that you use for other things as well. Why is this a terrible, terrible idea? Someone that I have never seen has a virus. And that virus is sending out email to everyone in his address book. At least 5 of the 10 addresses in the CC field are for providers. Obviously for providers. 3 of the ones that are left are going to HIS military email address, and to two other military email addresses. This has been happening for two days. This is NOT a good way to get outed.
Gentlemen, there are a TON of free email services. Use one! Don't be this guy who may just be showing his love of escorts to someone in his chain of command without a sense of humor.
Just a public service announcement

Chain of command will know who to go to for advice on who to see. :-)

I know this may not be keeping up with the times, but the less trail the better.
I would never use email for contacting providers. A prepaid hobby phone works
very well. If provider is not available or doesn't return calls, move on down the list.
I don't see a need to communciate by email with a provider.

An email addy is needed if you have or use a P411 account.

Use an email account that sends from a remote server, like yahoo.com. You can set up the mail, and write your message from yahoo (or others) without any input to your machine. I prefer not to use google for the hobby because it tracks your use. Use a set-aside server such as Camino or others that are free, just for contact to eccie and your mail. Do not let facebook access your Address Book, ever. I have had messages from 6 female friends trying to get me to buy something I don't need from Canada Pharmacies because their address books were raided.
I addition, for your next computer, get a Mac. Forget the added expense, the extra money spent will come back to you when you get the courage to trash the damn Microsoft. The reason that the virus still can enter your machine (hardly any can get to a Mac, and those do show on a Mac are usually on Microsoft software such as Microsoft Word) is because Microsoft programs can be reached from the operating system of the machine; Mac programs stand alone, independent of the operating system.
Microsoft is just not worth the worry. I have Microsoft operating systems on 4 or 5 of my machines, but those machines stand alone (cheap and dedicated for individual tasks): they are not connected to the net.
Some of you may disagree, that is your privilege. I have seen stuff come and go since I first got on the net in 1966 (yes you read that right, and yes Al Gore is an idiot with a big mouth who knows nothing about the net, and he did not invent it.) I remember when I was using a mouse with a Mac when Microsoft didn't have one and a lot of Microsoft fans really criticized me for using a mouse when there were all of those neat keyboard commands. Doesn't that really sound stupid today.

I understand, it limits your options. But that's ok with me.

I have loaded a free O/S on a couple pc's, worked great did not need any drivers for the motherboard. Have not tried it on any laptops yet. Since it is not Microsoft don't think virus should be any issue. BTW its called Unbuntu, comes in both 32 and 64 bit. Don't know if this is of the subject of this thread just my 2 cents for now.

+1 for hobby email. This goes for mongers as well as providers. You should also avoid providing your full name when signing up for these services. Even though your account might be foo@bar.com most email providers will still fill out the "From:" email header with your provided name. I've been surprised to see emails from providers that had their real name in the email header...sort of worries me about their commitment to discretion.

On a similar note...
You should be careful about how you choose the names of your email addreses, forum handles, etc.
As an example, I once saw an ad on Backpage where the lady had linked to an image on a hosting site like PhotoBucket or something. Well, the photo album was registered to a certain user name.
A google search revealed that she had used the same name as her MySpace ID -- Now I knew her real name, age, which part of town she lived in, etc. She had friends on that site who were friends and relatives, maybe co workers. There was no real harm in me knowing this, but we all know that there's some crazy people who might try to harass her.
I've seen quite a few times where a bit of quick internet sleuthing will turn up personal details of a girl who advertises on BP or Eccie. If I can do it, so can anyone else. Try to keep that in mind to stay safe.
