You're more prepped than me with the food.
I'm going to Mass for my hiking. You?

I never did the Appalachian trail but years ago did a month on the Pacific trail. An amazing and trueley life affirming experience. Beautiful nights and met some great people. Still in touch with two from all those years ago.I remember it like it was yesterday. But also remember the hard times of 26 days of backpacking. I was in pretty good shape and trained about 3 months before going. A warning though. Saying you have boots and dried food is nothing to do the trail. You need to be training right now if you plan to hike the entire trail. Without preparation going up and down hills will be killers. You actually may be too late to start if the entire trail is what you want do. I don't know how many months it takes to complete the hike but they usually tell you a date to start so the weather is at its best for you. I know of some that are doing it in sections. It will take several years to complete but still an amazing accomplishment. Hiking has become a science with low weight high tech equipment. I would highly recommend paying up for what you need. When you are out there its only you and what you brought and the better the equipment the better off you will be. Good luck in your adventure.

Thx Montana. I am in no shape( round is a shape, so maybe?) to do the whole thing. I'm going to pick and choose different trails and enjoy them that way

I hiked the trail in 1991. Hiking is 90% mental 10% physical. If you are serious, food and footwear are most important. Do not eat dehydrated food long term. Eat fresh food when ever possible. Bring 2 pair of shoes. One with a hard heavy sole to start the day and a softer sole later in the day. Pack should weigh between 20-26 pounds. I have hiked 10,000 miles and even now as I have gotten heavier I still hike 3 weekends a month. Best time of your life is solitude and exercise. Pm me if you would like more tips on hiking "the trail"

Good for you. Not many have done the entire trail. I agree with the importance of food/boots/equipment as being most important. I read her comment as I have boots and food and am ready to go hiking for months. The point I was making was she was way ahead of herself to being prepared.

Unless your first client was a bukkake orgy with a gaggle of foot long porn cocks, your first hike shouldnt be anything about the whole AT. The solitude you seek will be quickly found and before long home will look good. Make a weekend of it.

And you don't need a bunch of high tech gobbledygook. Be prepared.
