Default Chicken Ranch

Anyone besides me ever go to the famous Chicken Ranch in La Grange ? What I remember the most was the big black woman that opened the door to screen you. It wasn't anything like what was portrayed in the media.

Well, we now know how old you are. That place must have closed in the early 1970s after a campaign by Marvin Zendler, the Houston investigative reporter. And Dolly Parton didn't run it, either.

It's hard to believe that Tex. politicos actually went there. It was not upscale at all. The women were not that great. Just a big roaming farm house. Wood framed , pretty bare bones, stuck back off a county road and down a dirt and gravel road. Had a main viewing and selecting room with a jukebox. No alcohol allowed. you could buy soft drinks. Real similar to mid class Mexican whore houses, some of the high class Mex. WH's that I visited were extremely nice , but that is another story. This all took place in the 60's.

Difficult to pass up a chance to be under Nicole.

As Johnboy said, it was pretty plain. But, it also really was a Texas institution, and even a source of some sort of civic pride in La Grange. Anyone in town could, and would, provide directions, if needed.

And then there's the story of the guy who played the guitar in the viewing room, and warmed up with "The House of the Rising Sun."

Dang, I haven't thought of that place in years. My first semester at A&M several of us went there. Only one guy had the $5 necessary for action & it wasn't me. Besides, I was sleepy, so I stayed in the car and slept while two went in - one as a customer and the other window shopping.

Thanks for the memories.

I may be old to some ( old is relative ) but I can still run with the pack. I'm lucky to still be here after all the shit I've gotten into.

There were actually two well known brothels in that part of Texas. The well Known Chicken Ranch of course and another brothel in Sealy Texas. Sealy was much closer to Houston and I ventured to that incredible place a few times. The Chicken Ranch was larger, had more ladies and was very special. The ladies would be sitting in a darkened room around a jute box, all dressed in skimpy outfits or one piece swim suits. After making your choice the lady would take you to her room and after a quick inspection she would take your money and return very quickly. A nice warm soapy hand wash and you were ready for action. Ok I admit, sometime the soapy hand wash was all you needed.

I grew up in Houston and often after attending UT football games in Austin or Baylor games in Waco a stop in LaGrange was necessary on the way home. Once four of us stopped at the Ranch after a Baylor game and one of our guys was a student of the ministry; he waited in the car while the other three frolicked inside.

Still haven't forgave Marvin Zindler for shutting down a famous Texas lamdmark.
