What is a religion?

We have had so much fun talking about why Santorum is too conservative I thought we could move on to the outcome. Santorum is too religious so what do you think constitutes a religion. Now give this some thought and just don't say the big three. We have Mormons, Druids, and Scientology. Why are they religions or if they are not, what are they?

Religion is a practice employed by people to reduce God to concept they can understand, rather than raising their level of comprehension to understand God where he/she is.

It is the first political system to transcend blood relation. First was family, then clan, then, when "villages" began to form religion was invented so the few could control the many. It is the first and most successful con game, with new versions emerging all the time, the cult of AGW harkens back to the early nature cults, complete with admonitions to "change our ways" lest we anger the deities of nature.

It is a general term for the fairy tales of humanity's collective youth, fairy tales we'd better outgrow pretty quickly before some nut job blows us all to smithereens because some mythological "god" told him to.
