it's not about being badass, machismo is a pretty big waste of energy, it's about being effectual and honest. There will always be cruel people in the world, therefore it's important to teach your sons and daughters to have the capacity for cruelty; not so they can be cruel, but to arm them against other cruel people lest they be abused, harmed, or exploited.
