Post When to Respond Via Text

So last night a client was texting me as my phone was dying. Now that my

phone is charged back up today I was going to respond. As I was doing this I

started to wonder...I know a lot of clients have to be all discrete and sneaky

and such, this man that was texting me I haven't seen before and I wasn't sure

if it was appropriate to respond seeing as I don't know his situation. On the

other hand, I didn't want to be portrayed as an illegitimate provider or lets say

"wishy washy" by not responding. So when is it okay and how do you know?

You're in a pickle! Here's an idea: You could make up a name and text "Joe, not sure I wrote down your number correctly. Is this you? My apologies if you're not Joe. ~ Jack." If HE recognizes the number, he'll call you or text when it's convenient. If he doesn't recognize it, the message seems innocuous if somebody else sees it (SO, for example).

I think that once a person sends a text, they expect to have it returned. I agree with your point of discretion, but out of courtesy, I don't think responding to the text would be that great of an imposition.

I also believe that responding to the text explaining what happened would go a long way in keeping someone from getting the wrong impression about what kind of provider you are or are not. its a customer service thing

Last night he was looking for a response, not today. That said, you are still probably ok responding since I would guess most guys are not around their SO during the day.

That said, keep it VERY generic so he can play it off as a wrong number if he needs to.

Suggesting a text a day after they were texting is the advice of a single man. The last one that did that to me did so at a very bad time and I put her on my dns list.

Yeah, probably true. Wouldn't be an issue for me except in the rarest of circumstances. Murphy's Law suggests that's when the text would arrive.

I concur. Definitely don't use his name in the text.

This guy's luck, his actual name is Joe, his SO sees the text, and now accuses him of hiding a gay relationship with this "Jack" guy...

My 2 cents, don't text the next day. I don't mind the texts on a "day of", if I am expecting it, say just before a meeting to relay location, perhaps a "give me 5 more minutes" request, etc. If it's now the next day, use another method, such as e-mail or a private message to the guy on here, explaining the phone charge situation, etc.

Discretion is everything, and I would treat any unexpected texts as random and potentially hazardous to my health.

I would recommend not texting with a made up name. If I am contacted asking for the wrong person or from someone implying they are someone else I am going to assume the worst. That is just me though. I would assume you dont have your shit together. Good luck with finding a decent way to communicate.
