Our adopted Grandfather, who was a widower for a long time, had some neat toys, early metal detector, like the first to hit the US market, and, he also had a very early 1960s radio, that had one of the first attached solar cells, it even took a very obsolete paper wrapped battery.
But, early 70s, getting a tan, outside, it worked great, in full sunlight, but if a cloud went in front of the sun, it quit working, because the storage battery, didn't hold much charge.
So, after a day of working for 5 minutes on, and then off, I began so see this high tech item for what it was, only useful during the day, and then if you got clouds, it was useless.
Why bother?
Same thing today, cells are bigger, batteries are better, but bottom line is, you eventually run out of power.
Another Krakatoa then cuts 2 percent of the sunlight, the world loses 2 percent of its total power producing capacity.
A small nuclear winter, or mini ice age?
Wipe your ass goodbye.
