Default central TX floods

A true disaster.

Supposedly the river level rose 25 feet in less than an hour. RVs and cars swept down the river, some with people inside. An RV is not worth much if it gets flooded. Same with electric cars.

A few years back a river crossing in south San Antonio flooded. A young man (more testosterone than sense) with a lifted, balloon tired pickup drove around the barricades into the water.

Because they don't teach simple science in school anymore, as soon as the tires lost contact with the road, the air filled tires flipped the pickup upside down. (Air in tires lighter than heavy V8 engine block.)

Then the real tragedy happened. The young man did not call 911 (the fire rescue teams were all activated and on standby), but chose to live stream his death on Facebook Live. For over four minutes he streamed the water getting higher in his pickup cab, until it filled up.

They found his body inside his beloved pickup truck in the flood debris less than a mile where he entered the flood waters.

In the above event ^^^ the flood gauge at Ingram recorded 29 feet + above flood level before it broke off and was swept away.

Mother Nature doesn't f*ck around.

So sad the loss of so many people and young children.

Death toll from Texas floods reaches at least 43; dozens still missing
July 5, 202510:11 PM CDTUpdated 1 hour ago

HUNT, Texas, July 5 (Reuters) - At least 43 people, including 15 children, have been confirmed dead following flash floods in central Texas, authorities said on Saturday as rescuers continued a frantic search for dozens more campers, vacationers and residents who were still missing.

The casualty toll will likely rise, authorities said, as localities beyond the main site of the disaster in Kerr County were affected by the flooding. A Travis County official said four people had died from the flooding there, with 13 unaccounted for, and officials reported another death in Kendall County.

Some news organizations reported the death toll was already as high as 52. Reuters could not confirm that.

Officials said more than 850 people had been rescued, including some clinging to trees, after a sudden storm dumped up to 15 inches (38 cm) of rain in an area around the Guadalupe River, about 85 miles (140 km) northwest of San Antonio.

Among the missing were 27 girls from the Camp Mystic summer camp, Kerrville City Manager Dalton Rice told a press conference on Saturday evening, and there may be others beyond that.

The disaster unfolded rapidly on Friday morning as heavier-than-forecast rain drove river waters rapidly to as high as 29 feet (9 meters).

"We know that the rivers rise, but nobody saw this coming," said Kerr County Judge Rob Kelly, the top local official in the region.

Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha said 17 of the confirmed dead, including five children, had yet to be identified.

The National Weather Service said the flash flood emergency has largely ended for Kerr County, following thunderstorms that dumped more than a foot of rain. That is half of the total the region sees in a typical year. A flood watch was in effect until 7 p.m. for the broader region.

The same thing happened several years ago in one of the SW States, maybe New Mexico or Arizona.

Campers were in some of the canyons when torrential rains swept everything away as the water was funneled through the canyons.

No easy answers.

A lot of bad timing here. A lot of campers along the river over the July 4th holiday weekend.

Very tragic and devastating loss of life. Property can be replaced, so the damaged homes and vehicles are nothing compared to the loss of life. There's got to be a better way to communicate flash floods because early morning hours before anyone is awake doesn't work.
