Ah Yes, Feb 21 winter storm or maybe blizzard
Looks like we will have a major winter storm system going through the plains late this week. Thought I would post something as it looks like several ladies may be traveling though here around this time frame. I still find the best source of weather information the National Weather Service which can be found at www.weather.gov.
Here is a link to snow potential and timing of snow. This could be off a little bit as it was released Tuesday Morning, but I would think they will have a fairly good handle on the system by Wednesday morning. http://www.crh.noaa.gov/wxstory.php?site=oax

Nope, nobody knows for sure till it happens. This morning I heard 6, 12, or maybe more. They won't know till it hits the ground, but as the storm develops, their computer models will give them a better idea. When I lived in Minneapolis, I remember them forecasting 3-5 inches; at 6 inches, they upgraded it to 4-6 inches; at 8 inches, they upgraded to 7-10 inches, and so forth. We ended up with 30 inches that time.
I think the problem is, to be serious, that when men are talking, they want you to believe that 4 inches is really 10 or 12 inches....

last night on KETV they said their computer model said about 6 to 8 inches while the European computer model said over a foot, so the split the difference and are saying 8 to 10. Now they say the storm won't hit until 9:00 AM Thursday but not changing the totals. Do you grocery shopping today because they stores will be packed and out of things by Wednesday night.

The storm is either big enough or its slow at TWC that I saw Jim Cantore from the Weather Channel is going to be either in Omaha, Lincoln or DSM.
Stay warm and safe all.

The closer the storm gets, the better the forecast for amounts and final track. The problem with a snowstorm, is if the track changes 50 or 100 miles it can make the difference of 4 " or 12 ". That is still pretty accurate IMO.
They should have a much better handle on the storm by Wednesday morning. The NWS generally updates there forecasts at 4 am and 4 pm, once in a while they will update it sometime between those times when a storm is coming.
The last snow about guesses were about 6 ", with a band of heavier snow of probably 12 " or more, they just aren't sure where the heavy band will set up at yet.
